Independent study is useful if the Päijät-Häme Employment Services cannot offer you a place in integration training or you can find some other training that is better suited to your needs. Sometimes independent study can help you find work and integrate faster.
You may look for a place of study yourself, or the Päijät-Häme Employment Services may offer you a place of study for independent training. Please note that if the Päijät-Häme Employment Services offers you a place of study, you must start and complete the training in order to be eligible for an unemployment security.
Independent study can be

• completion of comprehensive school,
• preparatory education for upper secondary school,
• preparatory vocational education,
• qualifying studies (e.g. physicians), or
• Finnish or Swedish language studies.
  Illiterate people may have the opportunity to complete a short introduction training to Finnish society in their own language.
  In addition to education, the studies may involve an internship or voluntary activities.
  The main study language must be either Finnish or Swedish. Language studies must include at least 20 hours of weekly education.
  The Päijät-Häme Employment Services make a decision on whether you can receive unemployment security for the duration of your studies. The supported period is determined on the basis of the studies’ duration, and the maximum period of unemployment security for one training is 24 months. However, the support period for completing basic education may be as long as 48 months.
